COACHING
Research has shown that Parent Coaching is a highly effective practice in speech therapy. It has been used in different contexts including early intervention, school-based settings and teletherapy to address a wide range of communication needs.
Rush and Shelden (2013) defines coaching as “an adult learning strategy in which the coach promotes the learner’s (coachee’s) ability to reflect on his or her actions as a means to determine the effectiveness of an action or practice and develop a plan for refinement and use of the action in immediate and future situations” (p.8). In other words, coaching is a supportive relationship between the clinician and the caregiver/family in which learning is consistently achieved and refined over time. Through this relationship, the clinician can effectively shares knowledge and expertise with families that support them in situations that are relevant to them.
The More Than Words® — The Hanen Program® is a parent coaching program for autistic children or children who may benefit from social communication support. Through this program, parents and caregivers learn evidence-based strategies to support socialization and communication at home. The clinician guides families through their practice and follow them to success.
