INCLUSIVE STORYTIME

We at Family Partners are commited to promote and advance acceptance of neurodiversity and inclusion of persons with disabilities in the community. It is incredibly important that we create spaces in our community that are inclusive and accessible to our neurodivergent children and their families, because we all belong here.

On July 14, 2024, Family Partners led our first Inclusive Storytime at Peoples Book, Takoma Park. To make the event inclusive, we made some accommodations to make this space more sensory-friendly and the book more accessible:

  • Dimmed lights, lower noise levels
  • A dedicated calm down corner
  • Fidgets and sensory tools to help with focus and engagement
  • Visual supports to aid in comprehension and language access
  • Language modeling of multiple communication modalities including gestures, signs, pictures and verbal expression

We are excited to bring this to the community and look forward to spreading the joy of reading to all!
